Basic Principles of Charging

2024-04-17

New energy vehicles typically feature an electric drive system consisting of a battery pack, an electric motor, and a controller. The battery pack converts chemical energy into electrical energy, the electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, and the controller manages the output of electrical energy and controls the operation of the electric motor.

Charging Methods

The basic principle of charging new energy vehicles involves the transmission and conversion of electrical energy, which includes two main methods: direct current (DC) charging and alternating current (AC) charging.

AC Charging Principle: AC charging involves connecting an AC power source to the electric vehicle, where the onboard charger (OBC) converts AC electrical energy into DC electrical energy for charging. AC charging is commonly used for home and workplace charging due to its relatively lower power output.

• AC Charging Equipment: AC charging stations (AC charging piles) typically use indoor or outdoor AC power sources directly without needing to convert them to DC power. These stations are equipped with household plugs or charging connectors that connect to the charging port on the electric vehicle.
• Onboard Charger (OBC): Inside the electric vehicle, the onboard charger rectifies and converts AC to DC, which is then input to the vehicle's battery pack. The Battery Management System (BMS) manages the charging and monitoring of the battery.

DC Charging Principle: DC charging involves connecting a DC power source directly to the electric vehicle's battery pack, transmitting electrical energy directly to the battery. DC charging is more common in high-power charging and long-distance travel scenarios due to its faster charging speeds.

• DC Charging Equipment: DC charging stations (DC charging piles) convert AC power sources to DC power using rectifiers or converters. These stations are equipped with charging connectors that connect to the electric vehicle's charging port.
• Charging Process: During charging, the charging equipment sends charging commands to the electric vehicle via a controller to ensure the battery pack can stably accept electrical energy. DC power is then directly input to the vehicle's battery pack, with the Battery Management System (BMS) managing the charging and monitoring of the battery.

By understanding these principles, users can better appreciate how electric vehicles are charged and the differences between AC and DC charging methods.

Electric Grid primarily provides alternating current (AC) electricity. This is because AC is more efficient for long-distance transmission due to lower energy losses compared to direct current (DC). Here are some reasons why AC is used:

Efficient Transmission: AC can be easily transformed to higher voltages for long-distance transmission, which reduces energy losses. High voltage transmission lines carry electricity over long distances more efficiently and with less loss.

Transformability: AC voltage can be transformed to different levels using transformers. This is crucial for stepping up the voltage for transmission and stepping it down for safe use in homes and businesses.

Infrastructure: The existing infrastructure, including power generation plants, transmission lines, and distribution networks, is designed around AC.

In summary, while the electric grid provides AC electricity, certain applications, such as charging electric vehicles, may involve converting AC to DC using devices like onboard chargers (OBC) or external DC fast charging stations.
